What Is True Brownfield Automation in Warehouses?
March 12, 2025
In the rapidly evolving world of warehouse automation, many companies claim to offer “brownfield” solutions. However, these claims often misrepresent the fundamental meaning of brownfield automation. True brownfield automation seamlessly integrates automation into an existing warehouse infrastructure while preserving as much of the current setup as possible, including racking, workflows, and operational layouts. Unfortunately, many so-called brownfield projects turn into complete overhauls, essentially becoming greenfield projects in disguise.
Key Principles of True Brownfield Automation
01. Preserving Existing Infrastructure
Retrofitting automation into current racking and layouts minimizes structural changes and disruption.
02. Minimizing Downtime
Automation should be integrated while operations continue, avoiding costly shutdowns.
03. Cost-Effectiveness
Retaining existing structures reduces capital expenditure and improves ROI.
Why Many "Brownfield" Solutions Miss the Mark
Some automation providers mislabel their approach as brownfield while requiring extensive infrastructure removal. This creates unnecessary costs, downtime, and operational disruptions, making automation seem unattainable for many businesses.
The Market Impact of Brownfield Automation
Automating legacy buildings will be a game-changer. Current capital investments heavily favor greenfield operations, leaving many existing facilities unable to modernize due to the disruption of removing their capacity from the supply chain.
Importantly, racking type does not matter β automation can work with roll form, structural, case, and pallet racks. Many cutting-edge automation solutions demand “greenfield” conditions, requiring infrastructure removal, floor modifications, and shutdowns, which carry significant direct and indirect costs, including lost capacity, SLA impacts, and increased storage and delivery expenses. The market needs a solution designed for brownfield environments that minimizes operational disruptions.
Advantages of True Brownfield Automation
How to Identify a True Brownfield Solution
True brownfield automation enhances efficiency, lowers costs, and modernizes warehouses without major disruptions. Companies that claim brownfield solutions but require full teardowns mislead operators into believing automation requires a complete overhaul. Smart, cost-effective automation solutions exist that integrate with existing infrastructure, providing a practical path to modernization with strong ROI.
SIMPL Automation Introduces ADAPTIV ASRS
March 5, 2025
ADAPTIV ASRS is engineered to accommodate a wide range of operational needs and business cases, offering an unprecedented level of flexibility in warehouse automation.
Key Features and Benefits
Seamless Brownfield Integration
Unlike traditional ASRS solutions that require extensive infrastructure changes, ADAPTIV is designed to work with existing racking systems in diverse environments. Its patented bracketry and adaptable configurations allow for multi-level deployment on reused racks, making automation more accessible than ever.
02. Minimal Operational Disruption
By integrating directly with existing storage structures, ADAPTIV significantly reduces installation time and operational downtime. This ensures a smooth transition to automation without major disruptions to ongoing warehouse activities.
03. Versatile Use Cases
Not every facility requires a fully complex Goods-to-Person (GTP) solution from day one. ADAPTIV offers both Goods-to-Person and Person-to-Goods workflows, allowing businesses to start with a simpler system and scale up as demand grows. This flexibility ensures a tailored automation journey that evolves with operational needs.
04. High-Density Storage
Maximizing space utilization is at the core of ADAPTIV’s design. The system supports unlimited height configurations and offers double-deep tote and tray storage, enabling warehouses to achieve superior storage density without compromising accessibility.
05. Cost-Effective, Scalable Growth
ADAPTIV provides multiple system configurations that cater to various budget levels, ensuring a lower barrier to entry for automation. Companies can begin with a manual pick-to-cart setup, transition to a high-density pick-to-cart model, and ultimately progress to a full Goods-to-Person system — all within the same adaptable framework. This phased approach allows businesses to scale efficiently without committing to an all-or-nothing automation investment.
With its adaptable design, minimal disruption, and scalable architecture. ADAPTIV ASRS empowers businesses to embrace automation at their own pace β while maximizing efficiency, storage, and long-term cost savings.
